The main goal of the project was to develop methods to assess and if possible improve breeding program with regard to fish welfare in aquaculture. The genetics of field survival in Atlantic salmon and the genetics of social effects in growth and fin damage in Atlantic cod were investigated. In addition, consumers’ and citizens’ willingness to pay for improving fish welfare were estimated using data from a survey. Values including social and ethical aspects (non -market values) for traits connected to fish welfare were estimated and applied in a case of salmon breeding to show how to optimize a breeding program taking fish welfare into consideration.
